Two Cuba-bound Aid Vessels Declared Missing following Setting Sail from the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive search and recovery mission is actively under way in the Caribbean Sea for two missing sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Havana.
Military Search Operations Initiated
The Mexican government has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board no fewer than nine sailors, as stated by a military release.
The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.
Background of Relief to Cuba
Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country endures repeated national electricity failures.
"The skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with appropriate safety systems and emergency beacons," a spokesperson for the convoy commented.
The nine-person crew are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their embassy officials.
"The group is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.
Earlier Relief Shipment
Earlier in the week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had delivered a significant amount of relief supplies to the country.
That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which Castro returned to Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and food.
Wider Geopolitical Backdrop
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with over 50k operations cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Diplomatic measures have increased over the past months, with statements from several officials highlighting the delicate nature of bilateral relations.
In response to previous statements, a senior Cuban official stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks commenced, although their present status remains unclear.
The maritime authorities said it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to discover the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the crews.
To date, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
