The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner Unilever prevented the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the company with his partner, disclosed how he plans to independently develop this new product within a personal series highlighting causes the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
This latest development deepens the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain that Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur revealed via an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Current Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first created several years back to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
The founder stated that he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years of involvement, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised following corporate moves to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
