The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his triumph in November.

"This decision came down to the security of my family and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its abundance of immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving there, it will always live a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Political Debate

During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

But his critics, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it should be a place for public city functions, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his modest Astoria digs.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent outpaces the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
