Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
