We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location from which the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
