Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities released video stills Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
