Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Music Superstar and Cultural Icon, Dies at 81 Years of Age
The world mourns the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican reggae singer and performer whose distinctive voice played a key role in popularizing the reggae genre worldwide. He passed away at the age of 81.
“With deep sorrow that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your support was his motivation throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.
Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hit songs including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat musical style and positive spirit brought him a vast and longstanding following.
In addition to his music accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a role that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.
He was among the select few of musicians, including the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
