Citizens have come together across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed state remembrance events until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' delegations met in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the plan.

A senior delegate familiar with the discussions revealed that an evening round of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source stated the morning session finished without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He noted that the talks are "challenging and have yet to produce any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are striving to close the differences between the both parties.

Essential Matters in Negotiations

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance provision
  • After-conflict governance of the region

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere appears as home now and until all the hostages are released no one will feel safe."

"When we see everybody home once more, we can relax again. Then we can commence recover," she continued.

Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Protester one woman remarked: "We need do any agreement needed for the captives to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Research now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israelis desire the hostilities to end in exchange for the freedom of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to pay their respects.

From there, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone areas and in the eastern area of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the dusk falls, the fear comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, explained.

"My family are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."

Health Situation

The medical facility in the urban area reported it had taken in the remains of six people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area reported additional dead people had been transported. A person was killed by Israeli troops while seeking help to the south region, medics stated.

The region's health ministry reported twenty-five of the {territ
